All Ears: Open Door Policy

When you and the homie are having conversation, can they genuinely talk to you about anything? Somethings may be off limits. Let's chat nonetheless.

The HOMIE: “Hear me out! I got to get something off my chest.”

Husky Jefe: “That’s cool. What’s going on?”

That’s typically how the conversation of something deep starts between me and a homie. Maybe not word for word, but essentially, the dialogue is closely comparable. So, the question/topic for this blog is as follows: Are conversations with the homie ‘Open Door’ policy?

I will speak for myself, of course on this topic, by answering, yes! I would like to say that, if there is a super power that I was given, it’s most definitely the power to listen. I think everybody needs their moments and time to be heard. Now, let me let you know that with listening, as best as I can, there will be some comments and conversations given back. I’m a very fair listener too, which means if you’re making a point or complaining (being negative constantly), I will play the fence and challenge your point. I challenge points, because sometimes when emotions run rampant, our visions and point of views can be skewed and you can miss the point or lesson in what’s going on. Now, I must add that I would always love to leave our hard conversations that we may share on a positive note, so I typically will close with a joke or something. I know things like death get tough to talk about, but we have to remember the good times that the person you lost has left you. What I’m saying is, that on those tough days, you’ll or we’ll make it through. Dark times don’t last forever.

Now, let me be clear about this next point. I hope you can put your feelings to the side, when I say this. You will be judged, for sure. I’m laughing while typing this, but judgement is inevitable. No one that hears the things you say or tell them is not not judging you. With me, I will judge briefly, in the moment, but by the end of the conversation, I accept you overall and love you. Also, I’m never judging and intending to take the information and share it. That’s whack. So, let’s say you tell me something like, ‘I went skinny-dipping with a nudist colony, then went into a sweat sauna and experienced some form of euphoria’. That previous ordeal that transpired gets an initial: “Oh, you’re a freaky frog or wild person,” but judgements leave when I say, “Are you safe and did you enjoy?” You see how the final statement allows you to live your life beyond our conversation freely. I want you happy at the end of the day. Everybody is judged. It’s inevitable to be judged, but you will not be scorned.

Also, with the open door policy, I am one that will take it to the grave. You can tell me anything, but if you most definitely wants it to be sacred, please lead with “Take this to the Grave!” Sometimes there is information that has to be shared between homies that can serve as an excruciating pain reliever, which is not for everyone else's ears. However, I must ask on this post that you don’t put me in a compromising situation. If you’re going to commit a murderous or heinous crime against humanity, I do not want to know. I’m not listening to it, at least. I can tell in your eyes, if you’re f’d up. Now, let’s say you do tell me you did something cynical, and I’m questioned by the authorities, then I’m going to tell the authorities. Don’t put me in a situation that can potentially take me away from my family. That’s fair. Now, let’s say you come up on a huge bank robbery of $150 Million and you give me $149 Million and you keep $1 Million– Nobody will hear a peep from me. In the words of Sister Alicia Keys, “I won’t tell your secrets.” Our conversations are just that homie. Ours!

Communication is a two-way street, though. Homie, there will be times when I need to tell you information, and I expect the same treatment I offer with this ‘Open Door Policy’. For me personally, I do an inventory of the homies, because not all homies have the capacity to handle a lot of information or specific important information. I think everyone should gauge and know who they can talk to and tell certain things to. As stated earlier, judgment is inevitable, but can that person remove themselves from that judgment and be fair in hearing you out or supporting you. I’ve had situations in the past where I felt unheard or my feeling brushed off after voicing my problems That’s ‘Homie Neglect’!!! That's grounds for homie termination, because I afforded that person the space when they needed it. Be a listening ear, because someone listened to you. Two-way!

So, before I close this blog out, let’s talk about some off limit conversations.

  1. Murderous and heinous crimes against or to humanity– refrain from telling me.

  2. Telling me about your sexual escapades, can be refrained from as well. Clarity: If it’s your special person or ya’ll are locked in in any degree or range of time– I don’t want to imagine them in that light.

  3. Constant Negativity– Let’s be positive somehow, if not then I’m not listening.

  4. Reality TV Drama– It’s fake as heck.

  5. Don’t talk down on people out of spite or disdain– You probably just misunderstand them or haven’t been effective in communicating with them.

Overall, you can be an open book with me. If you are the homie, we have an ‘Open Door Policy,’ but please don’t get it twisted, because that door will shut if you violate. Blog over!
