What is the definition of community? That was the posing question I encountered after being a ‘fly on the wall’ at a recent women’s event that a friend hosted. I was intrigued and informed. I knew at that moment that ‘community’ as I defined it previous to this event was fluffed and used loosely.
I was raised in Zip Code 38127 of Memphis, Tennessee. But, the feeling of community subsided as I came into my consciousness. Here’s the definition of ‘community’: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common or a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
I remember a time when the neighborhood (Zip Code) was more active and thriving, which means at one point the community was there, but I assess it in my growing up ages and see that ‘community’ dwindled by the wayside. My eyes started to see just people living together amongst each other. There were no common goals. People did as they chose and weren’t connected.
So, here I am with my brother after this event, on a mission. I’m on a mission to build a ‘community’ virtually and in-person. That event I attended exuded the definition of ‘community’. Those women spoke with each other, planned, helped, healed in the name of common interests. I was jealous and envious, not to the extent of negativity. I became even more motivated to extend that type of space and community for younger brothers, older brothers, and eventually extending to the women. Believe it or not, I think men could benefit from a safe space to express their emotions and be extended brotherly grace.
I’m building a community here on the podcast. If you’re looking for a push to be better, express your thoughts with friends (homies) then join this community and tap in more and more. Sometimes we’re surface level in conversation, but we are here to talk and explore different thoughts and ideas. This is a community built on love and less judgment. The world is already tough to navigate, and we at this podcast don’t want to make it any more difficult than it has to be.
Stay tapped into the community. We invite you to ‘Call The Homie Podcast’ Community!
